Christine Mayr’s artistic practice is rooted in her studies at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, where she trained in sculpture under Wander Bertoni. Since the 1980s, the artist has been exploring the complexity of growing up, childhood, motherhood, and, more broadly, the human condition. Her drawings and sculptures are at once sensitive, empathetic, courageous, provocative, and direct.
The figures are united by a distinct sense of disharmony — in their bodies as well as in their expressions. Physical proportions often appear unsettled: a young body may carry an experienced face; gender is frequently ambiguous. Yet, according to Mayr, such clarity is not required. Her work is not concerned with precise classifications, but rather with universal human experiences and emotions.
