Nature is something beautiful; it is something we humans need; it is something we make use of—even though it can quickly become dangerous once we underestimate its power. Above all, however, nature is something other, something foreign, something that stands opposite us—this is the prevailing view in Western society—something that forms a counterpart to art, science, and culture. Naturally, these three fields engage intensely with nature: they study it, interpret it, and imitate it.
At the same time, however, this leads to a separation, an unbridgeable distance, an inability to truly understand. Ultimately, the desire to recognize an order—and thus, hopefully, a meaning—in everything natural is not only naïve but also deeply human.
For this reason, the exhibition appears interspersed with analogies and juxtapositions that feel strangely familiar.
